Effective Evaluations - some tips from members

The following tips were provided by members of the International TM Club of Nyon to give guidance in provide effective speech evaluations.

 

Preparation

  • Read carefully through the objectives of the project

  • Contact the speaker to check the project, title and anything else they would like you to concentrate on, in addition to the project objectives

  • Set your expectations depending on the experience of the speaker

  • Print out a structure or matrix template that works for you

  • Remember to get the speaker’s manual before the meeting starts

 

During the speech

  • You need to listen and analyze at the same time, so the better you are prepare (see above) the better your evaluation will be

  • Take note of the things you particularly liked and the things for which you could recommend to improve the speaker’s presentation

  • Circle 2 or 3 points which you can elaborate on, these are your key messages for your verbal evaluation

  • In determining the key messages, think about that speaker and what will be most helpful to them at this stage of their development

 

During your verbal evaluation

  • Sandwich the feedback with a positive opening, your recommendations for areas of improvement in the middle and then end with a positive summary

  • Be specific by providing examples to illustrate your points (e.g. quote from the speech)

  • Remember to provide a strong and positive conclusion of your evaluation

 

Follow up

  • Complete the evaluation section of the speaker’s project in their manual

  • You can add more points that what you included in your verbal evaluation

  • If you are able have a quick chat with the speaker after the meeting to elaborate or ask if they had any questions regarding the feedback you provided.

 

When voting for the best speech

  • Remember what the objectives of the speech project were and make your vote accordingly – which speaker best met the objectives of their speech
