The First Rhetoric-Word Weavers Open House Was a Success

The first Rhetorik-Word Weavers Open House last night was a resounding success.  I haven't seen how many people attended but I would guess around 30 people all together were there.

One of the challenges that we needed to overcome was how to pull of this bilingual evening.  The people that participated throughout the evening really enjoyed the bilingual aspect of it.  We had Table Topics that started in English and switched to German and we had some really good Table Topics as well.  I don't know why this is, I was really surprised by it but with the Joke of the Day and the Word of the Day, both were done in English and then repeated in German and in both cases the parts done in German went a little faster.

Thank you to Seibert Media for providing the wonderful facilities!  We used their cantine and we had a truly remarkable view of Wiesbaden.  Thank you to Paul for arranging that we had such a great facility for the event and for your work in organizing the event.

Thank you Peter for giving us you good German speech "Wo gehobelt wird, fallen Späne".  Jan-Marco provided real interesting Table Topics that people had the option of answering in English or German.  Jan-Marco asked what happens when you're traveling in a spaceship at the speed of light and turn on your headlights.  He also asked what did butterflies feel like with they're in love and he also asked if we really need all those pesky bugs and insect.  Steffi and Andrea provided insightful evaluations to the speeches of the evening and Klaus-Ulrich gave an amazing evaluation of the Tablie Topic, which was a quite a challenge considering the language mix that we had when we did it.   I did project #4  from the "Speaking to Inform" manual, which was called "No More Boring Speeches", where I talked about things you can do to make your speeches more interesting. Jan- Marco also gave one of the more memorable Timers Reports, I've ever heard and with a lot of detail (like how long people spoke in English and in German).  Nils gave a real good Ah Counters report, counting all kinds of vocal pauses in English and in German. Stefan gave a good Grammarian's report and even mentioned how Andrea's body language when she gave her evaluation helped him to understand what she was saying.

I was a memorable evening and the first of what I hope to be many more collaborations between the two clubs.  People really seemed to enjoy the bilingual evening and it just goes to show that experimenting with new concepts can be fun and rewarding. I would highly recommend more collaborative events like this between clubs that have different languages spoken in the area.

Word Weavers has a lot going on in the next few weeks.  Our next regular meeting will be held at our normal location on May 14th.  The District 59 Spring Conference will be held in Krakow, Poland on May 16-18 and I'll be attending.  We're going to have our famous annual BBQ and this year we're welcoming back Word Weavers from over the years to our High School Reunion themed evening and we're inviting area clubs to join us as well, it should be a lot of fun.  Then there is the last regular meeting of May on the 28th.  I hope to see you at one of the upcoming Word Weaver events.
