Not Just Another Rainy Night!

On 13 August Word Weavers met at our usual venue, Turnhalle Biebrich and, despite the miserable weather, a good time was had by all, with the central theme of the evening being "time".   We were delighted to be joined by our Area Governor Peter Smith as well as two guests - John and Larissa, who we look forward to seeing again soon.

Patrizia, as well as being Toastmaster of the Evening, gave a speech "Get your Message Across" (Competent Communicator project #8), who took us on a visual journey across time from the cavemen paintings to Kaiser Wilhelm II who would only be photographed under perfect weather conditions (and which coined the German expression "Kaiser Wetter", Emperor or King weather for us English speakers) to modern day iconic photographs of the burning Twin Towers.   To conclude, Patrizia unveiled a short video message of Word Weavers Wiesbaden.  Look for the video in the near future.

We also heard from Ingo with his speech "Reinventing Learning" (Persuasive Speaking manual project #5). He informed us that in light of the incredibly expensive cost of university education in some countries, the internet is providing new educational channels in the form of online universities, offering higher education to students across the globe who otherwise would not have the means to attend a university. While this new breakthrough is exciting and has great potential, Ingo said that there is an extremely high drop out rate (some 90+% of people who don’t finish the classes) and he sees an opportunity for Toastmasters in the future of Education. He proposed that Toastmasters involvement could: change the current experience so that students become better communicators and leaders; improve what is learned and retained; all while making a higher education affordable to the masses.

Carsten play on our theme of time by giving us some time travel questions as Table Topic Master:  Darryl came face to face with fellow Americans at the Boston Tea Party in 1773 as a European visitor from the future; Martin took on Julius Cesar to win the heart of Cleopatra; Carola accompanied Goethe on a journey through Bella Italia and Joanne travelled to Sweden in the year 2050 when the whole of Sweden will be furnished with furniture from Ikea (if it isn't already).

After the Kodak Moment and a short break, were were into the evaluation segment of the evening.  Martin evaluated Patrizia, Rita evaluated Ingo and Pia evaluated Table Topics.

Carola was Timer, Karin Grammarian and Ah-counter.  Joanne was General Evaluator.

Darryl updated us that he is looking for people to help out on the team for his HPL project and that things like Patrizia’s video ideas shared in Ingo’s speech are exactly the kinds of things that we should be promoting and that there is room for everyone to be involved.  He also said that he was pleased to share with his fellow members that Word Weavers being Select Distinguished in the 2013-14 Toastmaster year, contributed towards the overall success and great year that District 59 had and the congratulatory email from the 2013-14 District Governor that he sent out earlier this week. Among the accomplishments of D59 were:

  • 3rd Best District in the World
  • 2nd Best District in Club Growth
  • 2nd Best District in +20 members Clubs
  • 2nd Best District in Membership payment increase

Peter, our Area Governor reminded us of the unique opportunity that we have to take part in the first ever District 95 Conference (November 14-16) being held in Rhein-Main Area! He said that he really enjoyed visiting our club and it is a great experience when you go out to other clubs to see how they’re different from our own. He said “If you measure success by laughter, then you’re (Word Weavers) doing very well.” He further said that “If you don’t have fun, you aren’t going to come.” Both of these point to how much fun visitors have when they visit us. Thank you to Peter for delivering a makeup session of Officers training before our meeting!

For those members of your club who aren’t aware, our Ron has followed in Regina’s footsteps and is serving as the Division F Governor this Toastmaster year. He reminded us of the Division F Fall Contest is being held on October 25th in Freiburg. He also indicated there there is a pretty good size budget available for promotion within the division, both for new clubs and existing clubs..

We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on 27th August.   Remember to sign up for meeting roles via EasySpeak and to let Darryl or Patrizia know if you've signed up for a speech or would like to sign up for a speech. September 24th is the Word Weavers Fall Club Contest.

Thank you to Joanne for the meeting summary!
